Pityriasis Rosea

Pityriasis Rosea is a dermal disease seen on the upper torso and the limbs. It develops as widespread pink round stains on the body.

What is Pityriasis Rosea?

The name of the disease derives from the combination of Pityriasis –scaling in Greek- and Rosea –rose in Latin. The exact causes of the disease, which is highly prevalent in cold seasons, are not known. Yet, it is known for sure that Pityriasis Rosea is seen among young adults especially in public areas like hostels or dormitories. The scaly stains on the skin usually do not feel itchy.

Must See a Dermatologist!

With the first signs of the illness, a Dermatologist’s examination is a must. It usually takes a biopsy to reach a definite diagnosis. The disease tends to disappear within 6-8 weeks from the start. While it may heal with moisturizers only -without using any medication-, some antihistamines might prove useful in case of itching. It leaves no scars on the skin.

What to Avoid?

One must avoid frequent and hot showers. Likewise, rubbing with a bathing glove must be avoided as it irritates the sensitive skin. Comfortable, organic and clean clothes must be preferred.
